The Diving Delights of Perlis And Langkawi

In terms of land area Perlis is Malaysia’s smallest constituent state, but it packs a remarkable punch when it comes to travel experience! Inland it possesses some of Malaysia’s finest natural attractions, against a backdrop of rich culture and quaint, old-world villages. Situated on Peninsular Malaysia bordering Thailand in the north, Perlis boasts one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline on the entire Malacca Strait.

"Little Duck Chiangrai Hotel"Unlike the centres of government and commerce in Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur respectively, life in Perlis is taken at a more relaxed pace. Perlis is accessible via strong road and rail links, and the biggest port in Kuala Perlis runs regular routes to the stunning Langkawi Island. The people are friendly and accommodating too, and whilst this may seem a far cry from the urban centres, transport links are excellent.

"Panviman Resort Koh Phangan"The major local industry is in fact fishing and some of the fish dishes served in local restaurants are truly exquisite. A dish named ‘laksa’ is particularly well known and is a staple in the diet of the state’s population. Nothing quite compares to enjoying a traditional Malaysian recipe prepared with the same day’s catch!

For the nature lovers Perlis State Park is sure to entertain and fascinate. These stringent rules are an application of Malaysia’s strict conservation policies. Be aware, however, that before entrance you are required to gain permission from the park management and obtain the services of a qualified guide. If you prefer a more ‘grassroots’ or budget experience then camping is available too! You can explore the sprawling caves, trek through thick forest or simply enjoy the company of a nicely decorated chalet! The sloping, rolling landscape and beautiful green surrounds are relaxing and exciting in equal measure.

Inevitably, Langkawi Island will also be mentioned in the same breath as Perlis. With undisturbed marine habitat, diving locations for all experience levels, crystal clear waters and pleasant locals it is difficult to pick any fault here whatsoever! Describing Langkawi’s compelling and beautiful nature is difficult; suffice to say a visit is required to truly soak up the virtues of this island. A short ferry trip from the main port in Kuala Perlis, Langkawi is considered one of the worlds most serene and charming dive spots. When choosing a dive company make sure you go with an accredited and experienced guide.

Perlis’ capital is Kangar, a city that offers a range of both luxury and budget accommodation options. Many travellers in this region use Kangar as their ‘hub’ for the ease of transport both within Perlis and Malaysia as a whole. It’s a nice treat to get out and about to explore the local offerings. Particularly appreciated for its museums, long and interesting history and some fine pieces of architecture – Kangar is well worth a visit. The shopping experience in Kangar is also very enjoyable.

"Golden Beach Hotel Pattaya"Finally, many visitors to Southeast Asia will travel through Perlis either to or from neighbouring Thailand. The border is largely free as Malaysia and Thailand share excellent international relations, however, bear in mind you’ll need your passport and visa to cross from one side to another!
