11 Handy Thai Words and Phrases For Travelers

When you go to another country, it helps to learn a bit of their language. Plus, it’s always good to learn new things. Speaking their language is one way you can try to reach out and befriend the locals. Learning even just a few words can get you a long way.

1. Khrup (Khap) and Ka

Let’s start with the basics. The words Khrup and Ka are usually attached to the end of sentences. You must know that the Thai language may change a little depending on the speaker. Khrup, which sounds like “cup”, is used by the men and Ka is used by the ladies. The addition of these words makes your sentences polite.

2. Sawatdee (khrup/ka)

You’re likely to hear this word often. Sawatdee can also be used to say good day, good morning or good afternoon. This is a common greeting which means “Hello.” It may be written as sawasdee or sawatdii but they mean the same thing.

3. Chai/Mai chai

Two of the most basic Thai words you can learn. Chai means yes and mai chai means no.

4. Sabai dee mai (khrup/ka)

This is Thai for “How are you?” You may use this after saying hello to start a short conversation. If somebody asks you this, you can respond with “Sabai dee khap/ka” which means “I’m fine” or “I’m well.”

5. Kob kun

If there’s one Thai phrase you need to learn, it’s kob kun which means “Thank you.” It’s polite and very useful everywhere you go.

6. Pood Thai mai dai

Meaning “I can’t speak Thai”, this should be enough for you to warn locals that you don’t speak their language. Keep this phrase handy as it’s likely you’ll be using it.

7. Mai kow jai

When things get difficult, you’ll find this phrase useful. If you don’t understand what locals are saying, just be honest. Let them know you have trouble understanding them.

8. Lot noi dai mai

If you’re going on a shopping spree, this is definitely the phrase you should remember. So go ahead and haggle away. It means “Can you give a little discount?” If you’re really aiming for good bargains, these words shouldn’t be too hard to memorize.

9. Aroy

Apart from its majestic islands and beaches, Thailand is world-famous for its cuisine. When you go to a restaurant and find the food great, you can compliment the waitress, cook or restaurant owner by saying “Aroy.” It’s basically saying the food was delicious.

10. Kept Tang and Check Bin

11. Sanuk

The word sanuk is used to express that you’re having fun or enjoying yourself. If somebody asks you, “sanuk mai?”, you can say “sanuk” or “sanuk mak.”
